Mammoth Cloning Reminds Us of "Jurassic Park" but Storm Replication Does Not: Naturalistic Settings Do Not Aid the Retrieval of Distant Analogs

چکیده
After asking participants to propose analogies favoring a zerodeficit policy, Blanchette and Dunbar (2000) obtained a high proportion of base analogs lacking superficial similarities with the target, thus questioning the validity of a long experimental tradition demonstrating their centrality on retrieval. Through the use of culturally shared bases, we overcame two limitations in their study that preclude interpreting their results as evidence for superficially unconstrained retrieval: 1) a lack of discrimination between retrieved and invented bases, and 2) an assessment of the effect of superficial similarity based on counting superficially similar vs. superficially dissimilar bases, which disregards the number of available analogs of each kind. Our participants had to propose analogies that could be used to dissuade a person from pursuing certain objective. A movie seen in natural contexts could serve such a purpose. Whereas half of the participants had to retrieve it out of a superficially similar target, the other half had to retrieve it out of a superficially dissimilar target. In line with traditional findings, retrieval of superficially dissimilar sources was scarce and much lower than retrieval of sources maintaining such similarities. Results call into doubt the hypothesis that in natural settings analogical retrieval is less constrained by superficial similarity.

The golden era of molecular biology has paved the way for us now to tweak, fix, engineer, or even entirely synthesize genomes at levels and scales never seen before. Sequencing technologies continue to improve at exponential rates and have yielded powerful new insights into organisms of the distant past, as well as those that co-inhabit the planet with us. The era of genomics has ushered in the...
متن کاملA Study on Dust Storms Using Wind Rose, Storm Rose and Sand Rose (Case Study: Tehran Province)
Sand and dust storms are natural events that occur widely around the world, mostly in dry and bare lands. Over thepast decade a large part of Iran has been affected by this phenomenon, and Tehran has not been excluded from thisevent. Therefore, having knowledge of spatiotemporal frequency variations can aid us in future management andstorm trajectory assessment. In this study the synoptic anemo...
متن کاملAncient DNA Comes of Age
Feature T he study of genetic material from ancient specimens was, in its early years, dominated by a race to sequence DNA from extinct species like the dodo and the woolly mammoth. Now that the supply of these crowd-pleasing curiosities has run dry, scientists are starting to ask new questions of ancient DNA (aDNA) that are revealing how the genetic make-up of prehistoric populations changed t...

Cloning, as a new technology, has attracted the attention of statesmen, physicians, lawyers and other scientific communities. This phenomenon both opens a new horizon on human society regarding its therapeutic features and brings some concerns to it. This technology is divided into two parts: Human or generative cloning and therapeutic or investigative cloning. The first meaning which comes to ...
متن کاملModeling and Forecasting of Paraffin Settings on an Existing Extractive Fund of Oil Deposits
In the oil industry, the issue of controlling paraffin deposits remains relevant today. The most common way in the Perm Krai to remove paraffin is to lower the scrapers into the well. This method is the main in the fight against paraffin deposits, but does not provide absolute protection. The least costly way to control paraffin is to use flushing with hot oil or water, but it does not always ...
